This comprehensive rail atlas details every railway line – surviving or not – ever built in the UK and, with its handy saddle-stitched binding, allows users to memorialise their own journeys as a permanent record.
Some years ago one of the great railway photographers commented that, during his long career, he had managed to travel over every stretch of passenger railway that had existed in his lifetime. He believed that he had travelled each line through the length and breadth of the realm and could have demonstrated the fact through his photographic record of these journeys … but most enthusiasts, however, do not have such a comprehensive – and visual – archive of material to draw upon. For these, there has been a tradition of highlighting in railway atlases those lines over which a journey has been made.
With its comprehensive information about closed stations, this book is an excellent companion to the many railway atlases and station chronologies and will be of assistance to all those who like to visit disused railway sites or enjoy walking or cycling along the many converted trackbeds that exist in Britain.
Providing comprehensive coverage of the entire historic railway network of Great Britain, Railway Route Atlas: A Tracker’s Guide is designed to permit the enthusiast to highlight those lines travelled over to produce a record of journeys. In addition to the detailed mapping, the book also includes a section in which the user can annotate a log in order to keep a record of when specific lines were travelled over and the types of traction used in the journey and, as such, it will become a unique record of each individual’s travels.
