Ninety years ago in 1936, Liverpool introduced a new type of streamline tram and 70 years ago in 1956 they made their final journeys in the city.
 
When Walter Gray Marks was appointed as General Manager of Liverpool Corporation Passenger Transport, it was assumed he would instigate a tram conversion programme but, having assessed the situation, he recommended retention and expansion of the tramway.
 
Amongst the new trams that emerged in furtherance of this policy were the ‘Streamliners’ – or ‘Liners’ – of which 163, of the planned 300, were constructed during 1936 and 1937. Sadly, the reversal of the pro-tram policy post-war resulted in their premature demise but a number were to see further service after having been sold to Glasgow. One of the type – No 869 – survives to remind future generations of this stylish class of tram.
 
Compiled by Martin Jenkins whose knowledge of the trams and of the city in which they operated makes him an excellent guide to the history – warts and all – of the type from their inception through to their demise in both Liverpool and Glasgow. Incorporating a wide range of evocative photographs, the book explores the type in service over two decades.
