The Bristol & Exeter was a pioneering railway heavily influenced by the mercurial Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Built originally as a broad-gauge line, it became part of the Great Western Railway in the 1870s. The Bristol & Exeter and the GWR expanded their operations in the area through branches such as those from Taunton to Minehead and Tiverton Junction to Dulverton, resulting in the GWR’s dominance in Somerset and most of east Devon.
With almost 100 largely unpublished images Western Steam on Bristol & Exeter Lines covers railway operation over the ex-GWR lines in east Devon and west and north Somerset from the 1950s through to the end of steam operation in the area
